One of the founding members of the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Albanians of Greek Descent was Angelos Kitsos, who served on the Board of Trustees and was a senior employee for years at the National Youth Foundation, as well as Chairman and member of the Board of Trustees of the Rizareio Foundation.
Angelos Kitsos, who died on 6 August 2008, was a significant public figure of our times. He was dedicated to the struggle for the promotion and prosperity of his special homeland, Epirus. At the same time, through his love of historical photography, he succeeded in making public significant memorabilia that highlighted the historic course of contemporary Hellenism. The contribution of Angelos Kitsos to the activities of the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Albanians of Greek Descent was of inestimable value and constituted for many years the main moving force in our effort to deal with human misfortune. The Board of IAOA, in tribute to the outstanding services of Angelos Kitsos to the Foundation and to our country, proposed to the Academy of Athens that an annual award be established in his memory.
The Academy of Athens, at its Festive Session on 24 March 2009, announced the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Albanians of Greek Descent Prize in memory of Angelos Kitsos that will be awarded from the Second Class of Letters and Fine Arts with a cash prize of € 5,000 to reward an original scholarly paper, published within the past five years, on topics concerning the history, architecture and art history of Epirus. Studies and collections related to the arts and photography of Epirus may also receive awards.
