Award of the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Albanians of Greek Descent from the Athens Academy

The Executive Board of the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Albanians of Greek Descent, part of the network of foundations established by the family of John S. Latsis, in order to honour the outstanding services to the Foundation and the country of the late member of the Executive Board Angelos Kitsos, decided, proposed and the Academy of Athens accepted the introduction, by the Section of Letters and Fine Arts, of an annual award under the title ‘Award of the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Albanians of Greek Descent in memory of Angelos Kitsos’. The grant of €5.000 is directed towards original studies, published within the past five years, in subjects relevant to history, architecture and history of fine arts of Epirus. Studies and collections related to arts and photography of the Epirus region can also be included.

The first award was presented during the Festive Session of the Academy of Athens on 28 December 2010 to Ioannis P. Houliaras for his work ‘Religious mural painting of the 16th and 17th century in Western Zagori’ which was published in 2009 by the Rizari Foundation.

Angelos Kitsos, who deceased in 6 August 2008, was an exceptional personality of our era. He was devoted to the promotion and prosperity of his homeland Epirus. He also strived and accomplished with his love for historical photography, especially during the last phase of his life, the publication of important evidence for the historical course of contemporary Hellenism. He served as one of the founding members at the Executive Board of the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Albanians of Greek Descent, officer for many years at the National Youth Foundation, President and member of the Executive Board of the Rizari Foundation. The contribution of Angelos Kitsos in the activities of the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Albanians of Greek Descent has been precious and was, for many years, the driving force in the fight against human misery.

The Academy of Athens, apart from the 2010 award presentation, has proceeded with the proclamation of the 2011 award. Applications can be submitted until 30 April 2011.
